Canvas & Clay is a playful and inviting new exhibition that explores the contrasts and parallels between paintings and ceramics in the Gallery’s permanent collection.

Taking as its inspiration the fascinating dynamic between these two mediums, and the way in which certain ceramics respond to certain paintings and vice versa, this is an exhibition about the connections between objects, irrespective of whether their support be ‘canvas or clay’.

Visitors will discover what happens to artworks when the traditional categories and classes are dissolved, and where they are instead invited to explore a space where the sensual plasticity of form takes precedence. Whether they be painted on canvas or shaped from clay, each artwork appeals to our need to experience through physical touch and to engage with physical form. This is an exhibition about the marvellous variety of surfaces and shapes, and the ways in which two objects can animate one another.

Representing team ‘canvas’ will be artists such as Richard Young, Pat Waters, David Aspden, Annika Romeyn, Hayden Jackson, Nadine Christensen, Eleanor Louise Butt, Owen Piggott and Andrew Browne (alongside many others). And in the corner for team ‘clay’ visitors will discover stunning works by David Pottinger, Cheryl Burgess, Kate Jones, Milton Moon, John Dermer, Greg Daly, Pippin Drysdale, Jenny Orchard, Tania Rollond and Owen Rye (alongside many others). After a visit to Canvas & Clay you’ll never look at these materials the same way again!
