Mini Makers are invited to join artist Gavin Roberts for a small abstract sculpture workshop in the summer school holidays. Participants will learn to shape wood and found objects to create an abstract sculpture. There are two sessions available 10.30am & 1.30pm, sessions are two hours long.

Participants will learn to work wood with a variety of woodworking tools including:
• Rasps, round and flat
• Sandpaper in different grades 40grit through to 400grit
• Small fine-tooth handsaw

Selecting your wood
The perfect start is selecting a central piece of timber as your hero form. Using Gavins famous “box of various small offcuts” select a piece that speaks to your mood or vibe.

The size depends on the maker whether the finished piece fits comfortably on your pocket or sits as a reminder on the shelf.

Found Items
Having found your base piece of wood it is now time to create through shaping the timber and adding components to extend form and create a satisfying aesthetic. Think outside the box and remember there are no rules in Abstract art.

Finish
The last stage is finish and presentation, adding a pop of colour or leaving elements raw, a stand in consideration as to how you see your work displayed, framed within a box or mounted on a small plinth. This is the time to make your work shine.

This workshop is designed for school aged participants. Participants under 16 years need to be supervised by a responsible adult. Please note we cannot offer refunds for non-attendance.

About the Artist
Gavin Roberts

Gavin uses timber, stone and steel to create the useful through to the whimsical by drawing out the unseen, mysterious and imaginative aspects from the seemingly obvious side of nature. Gavin is an awarded member of the Sculptors Association of Victoria and produces work for public or private display.

Gavin’s work is also included as part of the published international touring exhibition “A Gathering of spoons” where 100 handcrafted timber spoons from master carvers around the world travel the world.
