Open to all young artists aged 12 to 25 who live, study or work in, or have studied in Wellington Shire in the past four years.

2022 Wellington Youth Art Prize theme: ‘What Happens Through the Night’.

Artworks in all mediums are accepted (some limitations apply). Please read the Terms and Conditions and contact Youth Council on 5142 3044 with any queries.

The Wellington Youth Art Prize is  a non-acquisitive prize generously sponsored by FReeZA and the Wellington Shire Youth Council.

Entries for the Wellington Youth Art Prize is now open for works completed after 1 January 2021.

Entry to the Wellington Youth Art Prize is free and entrants may submit only one entry in any medium.

Categories and Prizes

The 2022 Wellington Youth Art Prize has three age categories (as at 1 August 2022).

  • 12 – 15:  $150 prize
  • 16 – 19:  $250 prize
  • 20 – 25:  $400 prize

The People’s Choice winner in each category will also receive $50.

Competition Timeline

  • 6 June: Entries Open
  • 14 August: Entries Close
  • 18-21 August: Artwork must be delivered to the Gippsland Art Gallery or a Wellington Shire Library
  • 27 August-13 November: Exhibition open
  • 25-26 August: Judging takes place
  • Friday 26 August, 6.00pm: Opening and announcement of winners
  • 18-23 November: Collection of artworks from drop off point

The 2022 Wellington Youth Art Prize will be held at the Gippsland Art Gallery between 27 August and 13 November 2022.

Terms and Conditions

Please read these terms and conditions of entry. It is assumed the entrant (or where applicable the parent/guardian of the entrant) has read and accepted the terms and conditions of entry when they enter the competition.

General

1.1 The 2022 theme by which all artworks will be judged, is “What happens in the night”.

1.2 The Wellington Youth Art Prize is open to any artist 12 to 25 years of age as of 1 August 2022, and who currently lives, studies or works in Wellington, or has completed secondary school in the Wellington Shire in the past four years.

1.3 Entrants may submit only one entry.

1.4 All entries received will be exhibited for the duration of the exhibition, except in any cases where the Gallery considers an exhibit artwork to be defamatory, likely to cause offence, or poorly presented.

1.5 Entry is free.

Your artwork – All mediums accepted

2.1 All artworks should respond to the artist’s interpretation of the 2022 theme: What happens in the night.

2.2 All entries must be the original work of the submitting artist and have been produced after 1 January 2021.

2.3 All art mediums are accepted.

2.4 Dimensions for 2D and 3D artworks must not exceed 1 square meter, including frame if applicable.

2.5 Works on paper without frames must be mounted on foam-core or be able to be pinned directly to a wall. Works on canvas must be mounted on a stretcher frame.

2.6 Video must be a maximum of 06 minutes and provided on a DVD or as an MP4 on USB.

2.7 No unprotected glass edges or wet paintings will be accepted, and works may be rejected due to poor presentation, or if the Gallery considers the artwork to be defamatory or may cause offence.

Submitting your Artwork

3.1 To be eligible for entry please submit:
a) a completed entry form online
b) a 300dpi image suitable for reproduction of the artwork. This file should not exceed 10MB.

3.2 All entries must be submitted online via the Gippsland Art Gallery website no later than midnight, Sunday 14 August 2022. No late entries will be accepted.

Selection process of Finalists

4.1 All entrants will be notified about the selection of finalists via email by Tuesday 16 August 2022. The decision of the selection panel is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.

4.2 Artworks selected for exhibition must be professionally presented, free of dirt and insect contamination, and ready to display or hang with either two D-rings or hanging wire attached.

Exhibition of Finalists

5.1 Artworks selected for exhibition must be delivered to the Gippsland Art Gallery, or any Wellington Shire Library, during normal opening hours, between Wednesday 17 August and Sunday 21 August 2022. Entries delivered after closing hours on Sunday 21 August will not be accepted.

Gippsland Art Gallery is located at, Port of Sale, Wellington Centre, 70 Foster Street, Sale and opening hours are 9.00am – 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 10.00am – 4.00pm Saturday and Sunday. Library opening hours vary – please consult the website for locations, opening days and hours: http://www.wellington.vic.gov.au/library

5.2 All Artworks must have the following clearly and securely attached to the artwork – either a copy of the online entry form or:
1. Artists Name
2. Artists Date of Birth dd/mm/yyyy
3. Name of Work
4. Short description of how artwork reflects the theme
5. Sale price if for sale

5.3 An independent judge/judges will meet and select winners in all award categories. The judge’s decision will be final, and entrants agree that there will be no further correspondence or dispute related to the decision.

5.4 Enquiries received from exhibition visitors regarding the sale of artworks will be directed to the artist or his/her agent/parent/guardian. No fee will be taken by the Gippsland Art Gallery or organisers if any artist wishes to sell their work. All entries must clearly state if the artwork is for sale and if so, the price to purchase, and details of person to contact. Wellington Shire Council and the Gippsland Art Gallery will not receive or hold payment (whole or in part).

5.5 Artworks are required to remain on display for the duration of the exhibition.

Additional Information – Collecting your artwork

6.1 Artists agree to allow Wellington Shire Council and the Gippsland Art Gallery to photograph and reproduce their work without fee for the purposes of promoting the Gallery, Wellington Youth Art Prize and Youth activities generally with full attribution to the artist.

6.2 At the conclusion of the exhibition, artworks will be returned to their nominated collection point and will be available for collection during normal venue opening hours from Friday 18 November to Wednesday 23 November 2022. Entries not collected during this time will be disposed of at the discretion of the organiser.

6.3 Whilst care will be taken to minimise risk of damage to artworks, competition organisers will not be responsible for damage or breakages.
